Enjoying the Delicacy of Dim Sum

Dim sum is simply a series of high quality, brightly colored small Chinese meals that are usually served as snacks in restaurants for lunch and dinner. Although dim sum itself originated from China, it has now become one of the most popular foods in all of Asia. In many areas of China, dim sum is eaten as an afternoon snack during the afternoon while in other areas, it is usually served as a special late evening snack.

Dim sum is made of different types of Chinese small plates such as porcelain, crystal, and wood. The most common types are the flat-ware items like porcelain and wood that are used to hold a variety of meats, vegetables, noodles, rice, and seafood. Some dishes can also be served on chopsticks, although these chopsticks are not used to eat the main components of the Chinese meal but rather for flicking tiny food particles off of the plate or into one’s mouth. Most dim sum today is made with meat and seafood.

Dim sum usually has an array of different fillings. The most common fillings include fruits like berries, cheese, egg rolls, pork, chicken, beef, and shrimp. Besides that there are also a variety of unique fillings like mango, carrot, cashew nuts, almonds, and macadamia nuts. Other fillings may include raisins, sesame seeds, almonds, and various spices. There are some dim sum wrappers available that include fruit and cheese and a variety of fillings, but the most common wrappers are those that have a variety of different flavors and colors, most common of which are fruits, nuts, raisins, cheese, and seafood.
